Biometry and genetic diversity of paradise nut genotypes (Lecythidaceae) PAB
Rosa,Thuanny Lins Monteiro; Araujo,Caroline Palacio de; Alexandre,Rodrigo Sobreira; Schmildt,Edilson Romais; Lopes,José Carlos.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the biometry of fruit and seed, and the diversity of paradise nut (Lecythis pisonis) genotypes. Fruit of 12 paradise nut genotypes were collected from plants in the northern region of the state of Espírito Santo and in the eastern region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Data were subjected to the analysis of variance, and means of the different genotypes were compared by Scott-Knott’s mean clustering test. The phenotypic diversity was analyzed using Mahalanobis’ generalized distance, and clustering, by Tocher’s optimization method and the graphical dispersion of canonical variables. The relative contribution of the characters to diversity was assessed by Singh’s method. The paradise nut genotypes...

Ecomorphology of Astyanax species in streams with different substrates Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Marcela A.; Fagundes,Daniela C.; Leal,Cecília G.; Pompeu,Paulo S..
In the present study, we assessed the ecomorphology of two species of Astyanax in streams with different substrates found in the Rio São Francisco Basin. The dominant substrate of each stream was defined as either "fine" (0 to 2 mm), "gravel" (2 to 250 mm), "rock" (> 250 mm), or "leaf bank". We analyzed a total of 22 ecomorphological attributes of Astyanax intermedius Eigenmann, 1908 (127 individuals) and Astyanax rivularis (Lütken, 1875) (238 individuals) adults. We detected significant ecomorphological differences between the populations of A. rivularis and A. intermedius from habitats with different types of substrates. However, the two species did not show the same morphological differences depending on the type of substrate. These results confirmed...

Genetic diversity and prevalence of CCR2-CCR5 gene polymorphisms in the Omani population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Al-Mahruqi,Samira H.; Zadjali,Fahad; Beja-Pereira,Albano; Koh,Crystal Y.; Balkhair,Abdullah; Al-Jabri,Ali A..
Polymorphisms in the regulatory region of the CCR5 gene affect protein expression and modulate the progress of HIV-1 disease. Because of this prominent role, variations in this gene have been under differential pressure and their frequencies vary among human populations. The CCR2V64I mutation is tightly linked to certain polymorphisms in the CCR5 gene. The current Omani population is genetically diverse, a reflection of their history as traders who ruled extensive regions around the Indian Ocean. In this study, we examined the CCR2-CCR5 haplotypes in Omanis and compared the patterns of genetic diversity with those of other populations. Blood samples were collected from 115 Omani adults and genomic DNA was screened to identify the polymorphic sites in the...

Genetic diversity of macaúba fruits from 35 municipalities of the state of Goiás, Brazil PAB
Reis,Edésio Fialho dos; Pinto,Jefferson Fernando Naves; Assunção,Hildeu Ferreira da; Silva,Danielle Fabíola Pereira da.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity of macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) accessions from 35 municipalities of the state of Goiás, Brazil, in order to obtain information about the genetic variability and to provide subsidies for the commercial deployment of the culture in the Midwestern region of Brazil. The bunches were harvested with ripe fruits. The following were evaluated: fruit and almond lengths and diameters; the weights of fruits and almonds; the average number of almonds, as well as the oil contents in the almond and in the dehydrated fruit. The parameters that indicated significant contributions to the variability were fruit weight, fruit width, fruit length, and oil content in the almond.

Inter and intra-specific transcriptional and phenotypic responses of Pseudo-nitzschia under different nutrient conditions ArchiMer
Lema, Anais Kimberley; Metegnier, Gabriel; Quéré, Julien; Latimier, Marie; Youenou, Agnes; Lambert, Christophe; Fauchot, Juliette; Le Gac, Mickael.
Untangling the functional basis of divergence between closely related species is a step towards understanding species dynamics within communities at both the evolutionary and ecological scales. We investigated cellular (i.e: growth, domoic acid production, nutrient consumption) and molecular (transcriptomic analyses) responses to varying nutrient concentrations across several strains belonging to three species of the toxic diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Three main results were obtained. First, strains from the same species displayed similar transcriptomic, but not necessarily cellular, responses to the experimental conditions. It showed the importance of considering intra-specific diversity to investigate functional divergence between species. Second, a...

Productivity Divergence across Kansas Farms AgEcon
Yeager, Elizabeth A.; Langemeier, Michael R..
This study used 30 years of continuous data for 135 farms in Kansas to explore changes in productivity using Malmquist productivity indices (MPI). The indices were used to determine whether there was productivity convergence or divergence in Kansas farms. The results showed there was significant divergence among the farms. The average annual productivity growth was 0.50 percent; the top farms based on MPI were larger in terms of value of farm production, crop farm income, and livestock farm income and received a larger percentage of their income from oilseeds, feed grains, and swine than the other farms on average.

RUSSIA'S AGRICULTURE: EIGHT YEARS IN TRANSITION - CONVERGENCE OR DIVERGENCE OF REGIONAL EFFICIENCY AgEcon
Uvarovsky, Vladimir; Voigt, Peter.
In this paper, we consider how Russian Agriculture has developed since the constitution of the Russian Federation. The analysis is based on Oblast level data of 75 territorial units during the period from 1993 to 1998 and is focusing on technical efficiency (TE), technological change, and (both aggregated as overall index) on Total Factor Productivity (TFP). Given that the initial natural conditions were approximately constant the consistence of political programs, market reforms and restructuring were essential determinants of regional developments of TE and TFP above or below the common trend. If this assumption is widely true an investigation of responsible circumstances for these divergences seems to be an important task in the actual regional-economic...

The Geography and Channels of Diffusion at the World's Technology Frontier AgEcon
Keller, Wolfgang.
Convergence in per capita income turns on whether technological knowledge spillovers are global or local. Global spillovers favor convergence, while a geographically limited scope of knowledge diffusion can lead to regional clusters of countries with persistently different levels of income per capita. This paper estimates the importance of geographic distance for technology diffusion, how this changed over time, and whether international trade, foreign direct investment, and communication flows serve as important channels of diffusion. The analysis is based on examining the productivity effects of R&D expenditures in the world's seven major industrialized countries between 1970 and 1995. First, I find that the scope of technology diffusion is severely...

猪熊, 壽; 永田, 美和; 細井, 栄嗣; 板本, 和仁; 奥田, 優; INOKUMA, Hisashi.
The 18S rRNA gene and the piroplasm major immunodominant protein gene (p33/34) of Theileria from various subspecies of sika deer in 8 different locations of Japan were analyzed. The similarity between 633 bp partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene among various subspecies of sika deer was found to be between 99.7% and 100%. While the percent identities of the 412 bp partial p33/34 gene sequence and deduced amino acid sequences between Theileria of sika deer from Yamaguchi Prefecture and those found in deer from other Prefectures, were comparatively low, 68.7% to...
